Who am I?

My Name is Jorrie Alice Landis-Clinton and I am a Visual Artist currently based and rocking out in the city of Rochester, New York.

My work is inspired by topics such as mental health, spirituality, and abstracted anatomy. By using materials like paint and ink, I can create a fluid-like state of mind with my canvas. Due to my experience with Chromaesthesia, it also allows me to associate specific ideologies to corresponding emotional feelings or colors.

Oftentimes, when I find myself overwhelmed with internal speculation or reflection, it can be a difficult task for me to express things using words alone. By experimenting with bold, playful colors in my work, I have found a way to create my own visual dialogue. Not to mention I have drawn much inspiration from other well known female abstract artists like Mary Abbott and Agnes Martin who created their own kinds of abstracted languages for years.

When people ask me where the ideas in my pieces come from, my most common answer is that it comes from the past. Much of the work that I do is a shorter, sharpened version of my own story. From every harsh brush stroke to every bodily composition, there is a small sentiment from a particular memory that tends to fall back on myself. That’s why I tend to be drawn toward certain mental health related scenes. It has become a secondary process of healing.

Everyone has a story about a time when they just could not find the right words to explain how they feel and I believe that the work I do is a translation of that. It’s not just the pain of life that we all go through but the melancholy beauty that we experience with it.
